HIM has a good story to tell and is very relatable. It clearly shows how other people can influence, damage or infect a relationship. The female lead, Sarah, is very insecure and comes from a middle class family. Through a school project in the seventh grade, she becomes best friends with an extremely popular, good on the eyes boy (Will) whose family is wealthy. This isn't exactly a story where boy meets girl from the other side of the tracks, but peer pressure and 'mama' pressure is intense when Will and Sarah drop the 'friend' relationship and become a couple.
Will's mother thinks Sarah isn't 'good enough' for her son and reverts to subterfuge to tear them apart. She has help from Will's 'ex', Jessica. Their plot to tear Sarah and Will apart works.... too well. Sarah is shown 'proof' that Will wants his 'ex' back and is going to break up with Sarah the same night she is shown the text.
Heartbroken and devastated, Sarah runs.... and she runs to an uncle's home several hundred miles away. Not wanting to see Will, Sarah refuses to go back to her small town Georgia home for seven years. When she does, it is to be in her brother's wedding. She never has moved on from Will and he never has moved on from loving Sarah. Will never knows why Sarah ups and leaves, without saying a word. Sarah goes to college, throws herself into her work and refuses to be involved in other relationships.... no one can replace Will. They do meet again, during her trip back but Sarah is gun shy. She never told anyone why she left. Only that she and Will 'broke up'. Now, seven years later, Will wants answers. He wants back in her life.
The negatives I had with HIM was the slow pace. Also, each chapter switches from 'Past' to 'Present', which leave the reader hanging till they get to the next 'Present' chapter. Also, the perpetrators of Sarah and Will's breakup never are challenged when the truth comes out. To me, that is allowing 'evil' to win. So, there are gaps that definitely need filling in.

Him Carey Heywood 9780988771376 Books Reviews

Not all it was cracked up to be. The entire book lacked any good plot for me. Sarah Miller and Will Price were best friends in middle and high school. Will had a girlfriend who he finally dumped his senior year (a bitch named Jessica, which just seemed to fit) and finally admitted his feelings to Sarah, that he's been in love with her for years. Sarah has been in love with Will for years but never dreamed he was interested in her like that. So, they finally get together and all is wonderful, but a few things happen and Sarah bolts. She takes off to New Jersey to her uncle's place, meets her new BFF Sawyer (a girl). Five years later, the girls move to Colorado, but the whole time Sarah is pining for Will but refuses to contact him. Why doesn't Will ever contact Sarah either? Yeah, I thought it was stupid, too. So now it's seven years later, and Sarah and Will just happen to be on the same flight back to Atlanta to Sarah's brother, Brian's, wedding. Fate? The book goes back and forth between past and present, but the present only spans the week of the wedding, so like I said, there just wasn't much storyline to this book. Oh yeah, and the kicker is that Will stayed in their same hometown and remains good friends with Brian and her parents, so its not like Will didn't have a way to contact Sarah. In fact, Will is Brian's best man in the wedding. It's finally revealed what all happened seven years ago that drove them apart, they talk at the wedding, they still love each other, blah, blah, blah. It was just a letdown for me. It was much more saccharin sweet than down and dirty. So, I wouldn't suggest buying it, but loan from a girlfriend.
In this book you learn about Sarah and how she fell in love with "Him" when they were friends but then leaves "Him," stays away for seven years and then has to confront "Him" after all this time apart. I listened to this book through Hoopla and I just LOVED the narrator! She really drew me into Carey's story about Sarah. I felt connected with the character Sarah because similar to her journey I left a place on a whim and stayed away for almost the same amount of time. Sarah's journey and feelings felt extremely realistic to me which is why I loved this story oh so much!

Now that I have rambled in this review I will just leave it at I can't wait to listen to "Her" which is the "Him" of this story telling his side of things. I can't wait to see what else is discovered about these two characters. I have a small fear that it will just be a rehashing of "Him" told by the other point of view but I know Carey Heywood's writing and even though these books were some of her first books, I really think she will deliver something new in "Her" and "Them."
