Holy crow! What an eloquent writer. He is not only masterful at conveying his feelings he lets you as the reader take part in the story. I do not know which person left the feedback on where to get started but I chose memories Memoirs memories from an ant proof Farm as my first novel to read.
I looked this other up because I enjoyed Winter's Tale so much. I reckon anybody that enjoys a good read should choose Mark Helprin.

This was the third of Helprin's books I've read, and the one I like the best. It is along the lines of humorous historical fantasy like Freddy and Fredericka. The writing is outstanding, and like Freddy & Fredericka, replete with many many laugh out loud lines. There seems be some difference of opinion among the reviews of Helprin's books, since it seems that if you loved Winter's Tale, you didn't like this one. I bought Winter's Tale after reading Freddy & Fredericka, but Winter's Tale was so dull, boring, and downright silly that I stopped reading after getting only a thrid into it.
This is a very entertaining novel about an old man reflecting back on his very active, many times eccentric, sometimes moving, while at other times funny life. Much of the humor in this book is written in a subtle (and in my opinion, clever) manner, and in a number of cases made me laugh out loud. Other parts of the book seemed to be very sincere insights to the typical roller coaster of life we all experience in one way or another (perhaps not to the extent of the main character). I haven't read the author's other books (someone recommended this one to me), but some of the reviews below seem to punish Memoir From An Antproof Case because the others are better. If that is so, good for the other titles! But I enjoyed this one a lot all the same.
It's a great read and you never know exactly what's around the bend. I've enjoyed several of Helprin's other books and he always has great things to say mixed in amongst the twists and turns of his obviously vivid imagination. By all means, buy and enjoy.
Helprin's skillful use of the language immerses you in the mind and experiences of the protagonist in a way that suspends disbelief and carries you along on a whimsical, comical and philosophical ride through the 20th century.
If you have never read anything by Mark Helprin this would be a good place to start. He's a very skillful writer with a beautifully descriptive style sprinkled with quirky humor. If you like books that are tightly structured with a definite build up (such as a suspense novel or thriller) Helprin is probably not your cup of tea. But if you love terrific writing give this author a try.
Right. So, I don't have THAT much to say, comparatively speaking, about my latest venture into the world of Helprin aside from the fact, as other reviewers have not been slow to point out, that it's very funny. I mean, come now, even the title is hilarious, when you understand that it's how the narrator's Portuguese wife would pronounce it, without the indefinite article "An".

I do have something to say about our "unreliable narrator" whatever be his real name. What we normally mean when we speak of an "unreliable narrator" in a story or novel is a narrator who pretends to be completely trustworthy and reliable, but is patently not. Our narrator has no pretensions of being reliable. He states this from the beginning and many times throughout the work. In other words, he is, in fact, a completely reliable narrator. We can rely on him to be completely unreliable and not bother ourselves overmuch about what is real, and what not. After all, the book's epigraph from Hamlet is, "By indirections find directions out." The words of Polonius, that unctuous schemer nonpareil.

There are sadnesses here as well lying underneath the picaresque humour, such as the story of how our narrator developed his monomania against, ahem, that beverage. But one has to read the book to discover it. So, I'll leave the reader to it, before reminding him/her that the book is also a sort of code whereby the narrator's precocious genius of a son is to find a certain treasure trove. If anyone cracks it, let me know, and we'll fly to Brazil together.

On a last, heartfelt note, the effect of all of Helprin's novels, including this one, is of inspiring hope and a bounce in one's step amidst what may seem the bleakest despair at the cruelties of nature and of man. The story our reliably unreliable narrator tells herein is no exception.
Not as endearing as subsequent Helprin books. Much of the book was mystifying to me and I did not feel it was believable (though by the end, it makes sense). It's a book with a narrative that will drag through the middle, some narrator oddities that will almost make you give up but, hey, it's Helprin, it's got to be worth it! And it...just makes it.
