If you can't handle the F-word, you won't like this book. But I found it to be really part of their normal vocabulary, not a lot of gratuitous dropping it into sentences every second word. After a while I didn't even notice. The book itself is hilarious. A ton of absurd things happen but it is just part of the character of the book. I also loaned the audio version to a friend and she LOVED it, too. I found myself laughing out loud in the grocery aisles and had people asking me what book I was listening to. The ending was pretty formulaic, but how they got there was pretty darn funny, with lots of twists.Tags : Agnes and the Hitman [Jennifer Crusie, Bob Mayer] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <div><div>Take one food writer named Cranky Agnes, add a hitman named Shane, mix them together with a Southern mob wedding,Jennifer Crusie, Bob Mayer,Agnes and the Hitman,St. Martin's Press,0312363044,Romance - Suspense,Humorous fiction.,Murder for hire;Fiction.,Weddings;Fiction.,AMERICAN LIGHT ROMANTIC FICTION,CRUSIE, JENNIFER - PROSE & CRITICISM,Fiction,Fiction - General,Fiction Romance Suspense,Fiction-Romance,GENERAL,General Adult,Murder for hire,RomanceGeneral,RomanceRomantic Comedy,United States,Weddings
Agnes and the Hitman Jennifer Crusie Bob Mayer 9780312363048 Books Reviews
My favorite Crusie/Mayer book to date! Crazy fun from beginning to end. I read a lot of serious crime fiction and mystery, where good people sometimes die in horrible ways, and a Crusie novel is the best kind of break from that. Never too sweet, often laugh-out-loud funny, and even sometimes very moving, ALWAYS a great ride.
This is a lightweight book to entertain you anyplace you want to relax. I loved all the good guys and knew the bad guys would get what was coming to them. The women who mattered were all smart, beautiful and feisty. The men were smart, strong and sensitive. There was cooking, sex, friendship, mysteries, decorating, love, flamingos ...you get the idea. It's great chick lit. I recommend it unreservedly to any woman who just wants to have a good time.
In the right mood, I find Jennifer Crusie to be a lot of fun to read. This is by far and away my favorite book she has authored. I read it over again every year and it still makes me laugh. The plot is too complicated to ever begin to describe, moves at a frantic pace, and the ending, involving multiple hitmen, a pink flamenco themed wedding, and a father returned from the dead after 25 years is satisfying and fully explained. The dialogue is crisp and the characters are fun and likeable. This says a lot given that the story is populated by hitmen, would be hitters, one crazy dame, mobsters, and ex-mobsters galore, and a creepy government spook who is orchestrating a lot of what is going on. Then, of course, there is cranky Agnes, the heroine of the piece who is fighting to keep the home she loves while some people are trying to kill her and others are trying to kidnap her dog. In the midst of the chaos she finds love.
This is a fun story - give it a try
Agnes and the Hitman
Meet Agnes, she's a cook, a caterer, advice columnist, and oh yes has a slight temper problem. Fortunately her boyfriend is a hitman and has connections to hide the bodies. It's a very funny dark comedy with an interesting and convoluted plot. Seems someone is trying to kill her and she does not know why. Her "uncle" is an old mob boss that sends his number man to keep her safe. As the action heats up so does their relationship. Topping this is Agnes trying to host her friend's wedding at her new house, a old antebellum home that, the bride's mother-in-law is trying to swindle her out of. If that's not enough, she learns there's a hidden bomb shelter under the house that may contain 5m in stolen money. Now her house is filled with two hitmen, a dog napper, two old mobsters, a mob princess, a detective his bumbling deputy, and the wedding party. What can possibly go wrong?
This is one of my favorite novels. I re-read it about once a year. Each time, I feel like I discover some detail that had escaped me in earlier reads. I'm a fan of hero-heroine interactions where they like each other from the get-go; not a fan of angst. Jayne Ann Krentz & Jennifer Crusie both tend to write stories with that common basis - which is why they're my favorite authors!
This novel has humor, action, suspense, sex, a heroine that isn't a whiner, mean or TSTL, and a hero that's thoroughly masculine but not in a brutish or jerk-ish way. There's death & violence that's not for everyone. Its hard to explain why a story with many humorous moments could be a 'fun read' when its peppered with such extreme violence but it is.
After reading this book more than ten times, I can't say I'm unbiased.
I love the fact that the two main characters are not your typical hero and heroine.
I love the way that the setting is very much an integral part of the novel.
I love the weight that co-author Bob Mayer, a Green Beret himself, brings to the male lead.
I love Crusie & Mayer's deft foreshadowing and the effortless read.
I love the way abandonment and leavetaking are woven into the romance between Shane and Agnes.
I love the backstory of the characters, including that of the secondary characters.
I love the drama, the female insecurities, the masterful description, the poetic totality of the story that for me, packs a knockout punch.
This is, hands-down, my favorite romance novel of all time.
If you are looking for a romantic comedy with dark overtones, look no further.
If you need your hero or heroine to be icons of purity, charity, or niceness, keep looking.
This novel takes two deeply wounded people, throws them together in the pressure cooker of the last week before a big wedding, and mixes in fatal accidents, murder, murder that purports to be accidental, and thievery on an unexpected scale, considering the quiet locale. Add a touch of mental imbalance and the"bless her heart" cattiness of the deep south, and you have a masterpiece of slightly sinister romantic comedy.
