Break Out (Dark Desires #1) by Nina Croft is an Adult Science Fiction/Paranormal Action/Adventure Romance.
Exceedingly well written! It starts off immediately with plenty of action with Rico running from an angry mob. The non-stop action and adventure continues to the last word on the last page. Although I found 3 typo errors, the story moves seamlessly. Not only are the character builds of the H/H complex and well developed, but you get a very solid idea of the secondary characters. In fact, you can't help but feel connected to each of them.
I was captivated by this world. Bewitched by the characters. Enamored with Rico and fascinated with both Skylar and Tannis. I was enchanted by Daisy, and intrigued by Janey. I admit it! I have been enthralled!! I could not stop reading this book.
I am shocked that this doesn't have a higher star rating! It is a 'Great Read'!!
Not only is it sci-fi, which gives you the genetically modified humans but there are paranormal's too. Then there is 'The Collective', humans who have become immortals with the use of Meridian.
I was so impressed with this story, the writing and the world build, that as soon as I finished the last word I immediately went looking for book #2, purchased it and downloaded it! I also added Ms. Nina Croft to my Goodreads book shelf.
It looks like there are 6 books in this series at this time. This one, 'Break Out' is free on Amazon right now. I found book #2, 'Deadly Pursuit' listed for .99 cents!! Books #3, 4, and 5 are listed at 1.99 and book #6 is listed for pre-order at 3.99.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves Action/Adventure, Paranormal, or Sci-fi that is written for Adults!

This fast paced and smooth flowing plot keeps readers on the edge of their seat with lots of thrills and romance. The author brings the story to life with well written scenes and details that capture the imagination and the fascinating world draws the reader deeper into the story and the strong compelling characters grab the reader's attention from the very beginning.

Skylar and Ricardo's attraction for each other burns up the pages and the sex scenes are hot enough to scorch the galaxy, but it is the relationship that has sparks flying with snarky dialogue and enough attitude to sink the ship. The reader can't help but get caught up in their story as they try to work out their relationship while surrounded by danger.

Spine tingling anticipation builds throughout the story as the well orchestrated suspense adds lots of excitement to the story and ensures that there is never a dull moment. Going up against the Collective aka the super rich may not be the smartest move, but hey somebody's got to do it and I must say these two make the perfect team to do so. Skylar and Ricardo are vibrant characters but together they are combustible and the reader can feel the energy as if flows from the pages.

The author has created a fascinating world that combines the paranormal with sci-fi and futuristic elements to make an explosive combination. I was completely engrossed in the story from the very beginning and Nina Croft kept me on toes with surprising twists and I can't wait to read the next one.
I get that this was a Paranormal Romance novel . . . but given the space opera setting it could have easily been in the scifi/fantasy genre. Normally with paranormal romance series there are predictable molds of characters. For me, usually the world the author builds trumps any generic characters. There really wasn't any world building in this novel. As for the romance aspect of the story . . . . it is more of a lust aspect. I really couldn't find any emotional connection between the two leads. Lastly, I dislike false advertising. It is a bit of a pet peeve for me. On the book description it says the main character is a nearly 2000 year old vampire. However, the vampire is less than 1600 years old. There really isn't any reason to round up 400 years, could have easily said nearly 1600 year old vampire. Honestly, I feel like this book would be better if it delved into the SciFi elements of the world the author created.
It's not every day you get to read a book about vampires in space, and it was a fun romp of a book.

The world building set up is interesting - Croft has created a world where we have multiple flavors of humans, from regular to genetically modified to immortals of both old and new varieties. Our heroine is an immortal of the new variety, and our hero is an immortal of the old variety. While we don't know much about the universe at large, we get broad strokes enough to paint our own details of how things have developed.

There's humor, the secondary characters (the crew) are developed enough that you want to know their stories, and there's a happy ending. We don't see much of the relationship development between the two main characters, but we are "told" it's been a slow build (over the 10 days they are together). The lust is instantaneous on both of their parts, and they let it be a slow build to the end.

I enjoyed the people, I enjoyed the story, but I think what will have me picking up the next book is to see more of this world Croft has drafted and the romance will be a nice bonus. And I love that the next book is a continuation of the over all story but about a separate couple. (Yay for HEAs and no cliffhangers!)
Kind of a little slow paced.. I liked the story will check out the second eventually. But over all I like the story and how the author combined supernatural and space with super soldiers and lots of other fun odd characters. Still not really sure what is going on with all the crew!
