The stories were good....it didn't work for me that they were compiled into what I thought was one story...I kept thinking I was reading out of body and missing the connection, when I was not missing the connection because it wasn't there. I KNOW THE AUTHOR, HAVE READ OTHER, ENJOYABLE, BOOKS BY SUSAN TEKULVE--HAVE NOT, YET,
READ THIS ONE (PARTIALLY BECAUSE I SPEND TIME FILLING OUT EVALUATIONS LIKE THIS ONE)!
I have read a lot of good books in my life, but this was certainly not one of them. I considered giving up on it early, and should have followed my instinct. I bought it because a certain website told me if I liked "Cold Mountain", that I would like this one. Well, that is a website I will not trust in the future. I still don't really know what was the point of this story? It followed a family in a certain valley in West Virginia over the course of three generations. No real purpose, no real direction, or meaning. I did pick up a couple of philosophies from the author that one could constantly feel churning about always at the core. The first is that men suck. They cheat, they are selfish, and they are shallow, but good women love them anyway regardless. Second, religion is just superficial, shallow like the men, and a worthless tool of manipulation to be used by either the church, an organization, or an individual himself to attain the ends of control or self delusion. Despite these biases, I could have enjoyed the book, if there had been a real story, plot, or central theme or direction. I hope my next read is worth the time I spend on it, unlike this one. Not recommended.
Too dark and morbid. There was no joy or happiness. All lives were along the same line. The daughter finally broke out of the woods.
I WAS EXPECTING MORE OF A COMPARISON BETWEEN SW VIRGINIA AND ITALY. THE BOOK WAS VERY DISJOINTED; WAS HARD TO FOLLOW THE AUTHOR'S STORY. I HAD A HARD TIME CONTINUING TO READ; BUT I HAD INVESTED TOO MANY HOURS NOT TO FINISH. I WOULD NOT TRY ANY MORE OF HER BOOKS.
This was summer reading for my school but it is an amazing book you certainly will not be disappointed in it
Story about an interesting family with many struggles. Well written story of several generations of the same family. I loved it.
More than "historical fiction," "In the Garden of Stone," is fictional reality regarding early 20th Century Appalachia. It's a delightful read and Emma is a character to whom many women will relate. Tekulve tells a great story and gets her history correct!
