I reserve 5 stars for classic authors, or folks I think will become such. I adored this author's The Crimson Petal and the White and was looking for more by him. This is an early book. I discovered along the way that he also wrote the Grantchester books which have been filmed and on Masterpiece Theatre.
This novel features magical realism, another of my favorite things. His later works do not use this, but I appreciated it here. The character is fed a drink that allows him to live a long time. During this long time, he works on the meaning of life in his way. We are taken from the first uses of chocolate in South America to the Hershey factory. There are some gorgeous sentences in this book. Runcie is one of the authors I'm inclined to follow (literature-wise) anywhere.

Love this book!!!! I have bought 3 or 4 for my friends.
Very,Very good book..I have bought this book for about 3 people.
Bought this book as a gift or a Chocolate lover. He was delighted. Turned out to be good read! I would recommend it.
Very interesting book. Surprise ending.
This was spell bounding!
I loved the cleverness and richness of the story, when I read it almost 15 years ago. It stuck with me so much, this time it was a gift to my 26 yo niece.
The intertwining of fiction and history was at first interesting, but it wandered to the fantastic when Diego met the Marquis de Sade, Freud, and Hershey (of PA fame) toward the end of the book. It had good moments when it gave clarity to the Indian culture in Mexico and the Spanish conquest of Mexico. I realize Diego lived a long life, but he also had a long list of vices-alcohol, gambling, womanizing. And amazingly he beat the odds and went beyond each one. Worth the read, but not a great book.
